Could YOUR Child’s Handwriting

point to an emotional problem?

Would it not be useful if we could obtain an individualised, and unique window into the development of the mind of a young child? Many people are totally unaware of the wealth of information that a careful analysis of their handwriting by a qualified, trained observer, can provide. This can be particularly useful to a caring parent, who needs that sort of insight to deal with what may seem to insurmountable behavioural problems. What is more, this sort of information can often not be obtained by any other means.

There are three main areas exposed which allow us with the ability to explore:

Their general development

Being able to identify and encourage their growth of creativity

Understanding their early personality and then particular problems

The techniques used in this process have been shown to be so revealing and reliable that they now form a major component of educational assessment in many European countries and the USA.

Why should Handwriting play such an important role?

Ask yourself this:- which aspect of what has been written on a page by a child conveys more information…..Appearance or content?

Many respond by saying that “content is King” as long as it is decipherable, and therefore intelligible. After all, they assert, the content tells us about the LEVEL of a child’s IQ and imagination, whilst it’s legibility is simply a matter of practice with the passage of time making the difference.

Indeed, that theoretical view is the one which is dominant in the thinking of over 75% of parents and teachers interviewed in a widely held survey. But at ground level…..in real life it was found that the response was completely the opposite. Indeed, Teachers especially, tended to place a strong emphasis on what they called “good” handwriting! (What indeed, one is prompted to ask, is “Good” Handwriting?)

In practice they agreed that a child with a neat, and also legible style of handwriting. Although accompanied by a negligible level of creativity usually scored higher marks than a somewhat brighter and creative young person with POOR handwriting!

That being the case, what can be done in practice to counter this obviously erroneous perspective? Firstly, both parents and educators need to be fully cognisant of their inherent prejudice, and its negative consequences.

The principle that should be adopted when reading the work of a child is that we must distinguish very clearly from the script itself and the content. What is paramount, especially nowadays, where block writing and printscript has become so dominant, we must never assume that ANY particular form is ideal, or has dominance in one way or another.

However, there is one caveat: where writing is VERY poorly formed, we cannot ignore the lack of legibility – and that would be a wise decision, because it could point to previously undetected emotional problems. There is an inherent danger lurking: when parents have a child with very poor handwriting, they then attempt to improve this as if it was the ONLY problem to be solved!

Some adults often go to great lengths to turn the tide, using hours of punitive practice, threats and bribes – and then are astonished when none of these types of approach seem to work.

Indeed, in real life, this often serves to aggravate the situation by elevating the levels of frustration and anxiety. This can only serve to further and already poor image. And because they have an immature, undeveloped self-image, this does not bode well for their future success.
